Often, an apparel pattern maker starts with an existing garment, deconstructing it to understand what the construction will require, and then redesigning it to meet a specific need or demand. They frequently work in textile mills and fashion design houses. It is a credit to these people that clothing is available in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and styles.

What Are the Roles and Responsibilities of an Apparel Pattern Maker?

There are various types of pattern makers within a business. Pattern grading, for example, works on patterns used for making clothes. They translate the designer's ideas into paper patterns that can be used to create garments. An experienced pattern maker knows sheathes and darts off the body but understands all aspects of garment design, including how it will be worn by the customer.

Sketching out patterns also requires knowledge about how human bodies fit into clothing. Pattern making is the art of translating a two-dimensional sketch into a three-dimensional garment. Patterns are made with paper, but they represent the shape and size of an article of clothing. Pattern makers are responsible for mapping complicated designs onto flat pieces of paper and cutting them out to make a pattern for tailoring or constructing clothes.

Pattern makers use their knowledge of engineering to create realistic patterns for different sizes of the same article of clothing, like pants and shirts.  It can take a lot of time to draft such complicated models. They work on new designs for garments or experiment with different ideas. It's important to have a good fit for both men and women (or boys or girls) when dressing
