An ordinary person does not realise of importance of pattern making in fashion industry. Designers and people in the industry can understand its vitality. It requires skill and an immense amount of practice. The professional would draw pattern pieces on paper, according to body measurements. These pieces would act as the base to help create different sized garments of the same pattern. Various techniques are used for this purpose. 

In most cases, the designers make one piece, while the professional pattern maker would make patterns for different sizes. The most common formats of pattern grading are:

• Flat pattern drawing: In this technique, the professional would take a basic pattern and create a 3D image with the muslin fabric. Once the designer is sure of the designs, they would put them on paper. It would help in highlighting areas that need improvement. A few components create the base pattern for both women and men. 
• Drafting: This procedure helps in the initial phase of any design. The designer would use the standard size templates or a model while making the pattern. Initially, it was made on paper, but now the trend is changing. 
• Fashion draping: This is one of the latest forms of designing, in which the designer would drape the fabric on a mannequin to create a 3D shape. If the designer is satisfied with the pattern, then the professional would transfer it onto the paper.  

In many cases, the professionals would need to make several designs. It would not be easy to make the designs from scratch. Pattern making and using modern technology would simplify the procedure. It is not easy to make different sizes. The novice would not understand which areas need increment and which stay fit. The professional would be able to do so with ease.
