2 Methods Used By Clothing Pattern Makers

Pattern can be defined as a template for clothing pattern makers, from which parts of a garment are traced onto a fabric before being cut out and assembled. It is one of the most important parts of garment manufacturing industry. This highly skilled technique includes technical ability, sensitivity for design interpretation and practical understanding of garment construction. Pattern making acts as an interface between design and production.

A basic or foundation pattern can be created by any of the two methods namely drafting and draping.

1. Pattern drafting is defined as a technique or method of drawing patterns on brown paper with accuracy and precision according to body measurements and standard measurement chart. This is an efficient and economical method that can be used for making different style patterns by flat pattern design technique.

2. Pattern draping technique is commonly known as toiling or modeling. This method manipulates two dimensional fabrics on to a three dimensional torso or body form to get perfect fit. The dress form is generally used for draping is a padded dress form, wrapped in muslin cloth. This body form is mounted on to an adjustable stand that duplicates human body structure. The dress form should be firm and not resist pins.

Using these two methods pattern makers make dresses from sketches.
